The unique, C-shaped, pressure responsive gaskets design has been the heart of the grooved systems since its inception. Relying on compound compression set and the initially flared design, the gasket seals on the dimension of the pipe O.D This design accommodates the pipe movement noted, while sealing under both pressure and vacuum. The manufacture and test is to ASTM D2000 and UL quality controlled with test of hardness strength, strength at break, elongation at break(normal state), change in hardness, change in strength at break, change in elongation at break(hot air ageing), and low temperature compression set available rubber compounds now include the standard gasket EPDM for water(+230°F /+110°C )and a nitrile compound gasket for oil services(to+180°F /+82°C ). Special gaskets include fluoroelastomer, neoprene, silicone, white nitrile and epichlorohydrin. Each gasket is traceable by being marked with manufacturing date, fomula code and operator's code.
During assembly, the gasket is slightly stretched over the pipe ends, applying the natural compression of the angled lips as well as the resiliency of the entire gasket body. It is important to note that grooved coupling gaskets always should be lubricated on the lips and the outside back before assembly.
Assembly of the coupling housing over the gasket mates it closely to the gasket back, fully encasing the gasket with a backbone of ductile iron. With the bolt pads fullyightened this adds additional compressive force without full compression, leaving the natural resiliency as an active sealing force within the joint. The full encasement of the gasket prevents any extrusion of the rubber under high pressure.
ANSI/NSF Standard 61 is a National Standard that was developed to establish minimum requirements for the Control of potential adverse human health effects from products which contact drinking water. Its primary focus (+110°C)Maximum.
Gasket compounds are selected depending on the service. The couplings are utilized for water services. The main rubber compound is EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer). For oil services to 82 °C and gas streams with hydrocarbon, Buna N is adopted for gasket material.

Buna-N rubber gaskets
The buna-N rubber gaskets is mainly used to manufacture oil resistant rubber products. Acrylonitrile content (%) in nitrile rubber includes 42 ~ 46, 36 ~ 41, 31 ~ 35, 25 ~ 30 and 18 ~ 24. The higher the content of acrylonitrile, the better the oil resistance, but the cold resistance decreases accordingly. The buna-N rubber gaskets can be used in air at 120 ℃ or oil at 150 ℃ for a long time. In addition, it also has good water resistance, air tightness and excellent bonding performance. The buna-N rubber gaskets is widely used to make various oil resistant rubber products, a variety of oil resistant gaskets, gaskets, sleeves, flexible packaging, flexible hose, printing and dyeing rubber rollers, cable rubber materials, etc. it has become an essential elastic material in automobile, aviation, petroleum, copying and other industries.

Characteristic Description
Nitrile rubber has superior performance of petroleum resistant products. Its service temperature range can be expanded to - 55 ° C ~ 125 ° C (- 67 ° f ~ 275 ° f) through the formulation of special formula. It is the most widely used sealing material.
Nitrile rubber is a copolymer of butadiene and acrylonitrile. The content of acrylonitrile (ACN) in NBR molecule is variable (18 to 50%), which can be used to adjust the oil resistance and low temperature resistance of the material. The higher the content of acrylonitrile, the better the properties of lubricating oil and fuel oil resistance, but the elasticity becomes worse at low temperature. On the contrary, the lower the acrylonitrile content, the better the drop temperature resistance, but at the expense of the properties of lubricating oil and fuel oil resistance. Military specifications an and MS O-ring specifications require nitrile rubber with low acrylonitrile formula to ensure its low temperature resistance.
NBR has excellent compression set, tear resistance and wear resistance, but it does not have good weather and ozone resistance, and the heat resistance is only medium.
